60th Annual Emmy Awards: Piven, Smart, Wiest win

LOS ANGELES — Jeremy Piven of “Entourage” and Jean Smart of “Samantha Who?” received best supporting comedy acting honors at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, with Zeljko Ivanek of “Damages” and Dianne Wiest of “In Treatment” nabbing supporting trophies for a drama series.

“These are strange times for all of us. To be a working actor is an unbelievable gift. None of this is lost on me,” Piven said as he accepted the award for best supporting actor in a comedy series.

Piven took aim at the five reality hosts who helped open the ceremony in what could charitably called a rambling way, saying, “What if I just kept talking for 12 minutes — what would happen? That was the opening.”

The crowd at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards laughed heartily, not a good sign for the hosts that included Ryan Seacreast of “American Idol.”

Smart was honored as best supporting actress in a comedy series.

“I’m very proud to be an actor,” Smart said.

Before the celebrities arrived on the red carpet, there were the many with the microphones.

Fans who showed up early to get a good view of arrivals at the 60th annual Emmy Awards at Nokia Theatre had to content themselves for hours with the reporters and producers staking out turf on the carpet. But enthusiasm seemed to run high nonetheless.

Spotting fashion maven Steven “Cojo” Cojocaru of “Entertainment Tonight” in a silver tux and yellow bow tie, fan Susan Kelleher of Los Angeles couldn’t contain herself.

“You look fabulous!” she yelled.

“I do. I do look fabulous,” he agreed.
