Hurricane Fay Projected Path

Latest update on the path of Tropical Storm Fay shows the storm almost hitting near Fort Myers Florida and then going north along the coastline.


“Instead of taking the storm further out into the Gulf of Mexico, now it looks like Fay will be coming closer to Central Florida,” Local 6’s Rob Eicher said. “It looks like it will come through western sections of Central Florida as a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane during the day on Tuesday and during the early part of the day on Wednesday.” 2
A tropical storm warning remained in effect for the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to Key West. A hurricane watch was in effect for most of the Keys and along Florida’s west coast to Tarpon Springs. A tropical storm watch was in effect for from north of Jupiter Inlet to Sebastian Inlet. 3

Keys officials earlier today issued a mandatory evacuation order for visitors and asked those who had not yet arrived to postpone their trips. Florida Keys officials closed schools, opened shelters and urged visitors to leave as Tropical Storm Fay threatened to strengthen into a hurricane today, but residents and tourists seemed in no hurry to evacuate. 5

According to NOAA today it is only going to be a tropical storm. It looks like it might hit Tampa as a hurricane, but only for a short while. It changes all the time. 4

Fay had the potential to hit Florida as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, with winds reaching more than 100 mph, National Hurricane Center forecasters said. But they stressed it was too early to tell exactly how intense the storm would become or where it would make landfall. 8

Flooding from Fay killed two people and left two children missing in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, authorities said Saturday. Forecasters said the storm could reach hurricane strength when it approaches central Cuba on Sunday, and the government there issued a hurricane watch for several provinces. 9

First of all, it’s not a Hurricane (at least not yet); just a Tropical Storm. It’s projected path takes it to the west coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Eventually it will take a turn back to the east - back out to the Atlantic where it will die out. If it cuts across the Tampa area in a north-east direction, that would put it toward Orlando. It may or may not be a Hurricane at that point. It’s too early to tell or project it out that far. South Florida will definitely be effected tomorrow, tomorrow night and Tuesday morning probably. 6

Hurricanes are associated with severe thunder storms over warm and Tropical Ocean. These storms are the most destructive and threatening one, in Japan it is known as typhoons and in India it is called a cyclone. 7
