Gmail down with the “Temporary Error (502)”

Gmail users yesterday faced problems while accessing their accounts. The service was down for almost an hour. While accessing the account, “Temporary Error (502)” message was shown. The service is now back.

A lot of messages regarding the service outage were seen on different micro-blogging services like Twitter and Friendfeed.

According to Gmail Product Manager, Todd Jackson:

Many of you had trouble accessing Gmail for a couple of hours this afternoon, and we’re really sorry. The issue was caused by a temporary outage in our contacts system that was preventing Gmail from loading properly.

On the cause of the service outage, he said:

The issue was caused by a temporary outage in our contacts system that was preventing Gmail from loading properly.

On the recovery of service, Todd said:

We’ve identified the source of this issue and fixed it. In addition, as with all issues that affect Gmail and our other services, we’re conducting a full review of what went wrong and moving quickly to update our internal systems and procedures accordingly.

This is not the first time the service went down, last week also the service outage was observed for a short time. Gmail is one of the most popular email services with a number of users, this is the reason why the service outage raised so much user voice on different forums.

Gmail apologized its users regarding the service outage.

We don’t usually post about problems like this on our blog, but we wanted to make an exception in this case since so many people were impacted.

Again, we’re sorry.
