Texas, Ohio exit polls 2008 tonight
7:01 p.m. | Vermont Closes: The networks are all calling Vermont for Barack Obama. Looks like both Ben and Jerry got to the polls.
Texhioverisland: When, you might ask, will we know whether Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lives to fight another day? Or whether Senator Barack Obama can wrap this thing up?
Here’s the line-up for poll closings tonight, Eastern time:
Vermont: 7 p.m.
Ohio: 7:30 p.m.
Texas primary: 8 p.m.
Texas caucuses: Supposed to start at 8:15 p.m.
Rhode Island: 9 p.m.
The results from Vermont and Rhode Island are likely to come in shortly after the polls close in those states. Ohio is likely to be slow because Cleveland, for one, has paper ballots and they have to be counted by hand. Ugh!
The two-step process in Texas will basically be a mess and it’s impossible to say when it will be over. And if the outcome is as close as the polls suggest it will be, there will be couple of different ways to measure success _ depending on the popular vote in the primary and the allocation of the state’s 193 delegates. Voters are to choose 126 delegates in the primary and 67 in the caucuses.
While you wait for results to come in, here are some early results from the exit polls:
Democratic voters in Ohio and Texas said that Senator Barack Obama was more inspiring and more likely to win in November than Mrs. Clinton.
They also said that Mrs. Clinton offered more specific plans to solve the country’s problems and was more qualified to be commander-in-chief than Mr. Obama.
On the Republican side — remember them? — most voters said they would be satisfied with Senator John McCain as the nominee but about 40 percent said his positions on the issues are not conservative enough.
We’ll stick with you through the night, let you know what you need to know, and try to provide some useful details and insight along the way, both home grown and from around the Web. We have colleagues in Texas and Ohio to provide us the latest from the ground there.
