Cookeville Workers Win $200,000 in TN Lottery After Wrong Ticket

Interesting things are happening with TN Lotter as Cookeville workers in Tenessee finally winn $200,000 dollars after the first attempt to claim the winning lottery with wrong ticket, but will they choose an annuity or structured settlement?

Boatman, winning with the Tennessee Lottery took a bit of extra work than most players experience.

Kathy, along with eight co-workers from Cookeville’s Flexial manufacturing company, drove to Nashville on Tuesday morning to collect a Powerball prize of $200,000. However, when she gave the winning ticket to the Lottery’s claim office, she was told it wasn’t a winner. Turns out, Kathy had brought the wrong ticket!

“I can’t believe it! I thought I would throw up!” Kathy said.

Luckily, the story has a happy ending. Kathy and her husband Tom made the hour-drive back to Cookeville, found the correct ticket, returned to Nashville and claimed the prize, which will be distributed among the group.

“In 23 years, I’ve never had anything like this happen,” said Tennessee Lottery President and CEO Rebecca Hargrove. “

“The funny thing is that I’ve been guarding the wrong ticket with my life since the drawing (on Saturday, Jan. 19),” said Kathy. “All this time the winning ticket was just sitting in a pile!”

Kathy, along with eight co-workers, has been pooling $2 per week for Powerball tickets since August 2007. She keeps records for the group and purchases the tickets. Known for being meticulous, the others were surprised, but not worried, when they found out she had brought the wrong ticket.

“I’m just glad it’s over!” Kathy said, as she passed the prize check around for everyone to see.

Since the Tennessee Lottery began selling tickets on Jan. 20, 2004, it has raised more than $1 billion to fund specific education programs, including college scholarships, pre-kindergarten and after-school programs. As we are reporting this news we though it may be appropriate to inform that lottery winnings are sometimes paid out over 10-20 years making it difficult for people to use the money in the way they may chose.

The TN Lottery winners or any lotter winners may want to consider an annuity or cash for structured settlement, which helps lottery winners convert annual payments into a large lump sum payment.
