Those close to Cave murder react to Laura Hall interview

Laura HallTuesday night’s broadcast brought Laura Hall national attention, with some viewers learning about the case for the first time. For others here in Austin, it’s just another chapter in a sordid story.

Jennifer Cave’s former boyfriend, Scott Engle, moved to North Austin after the murder.

Engle and Cave broke up two weeks prior to her death, but they got together in the hours before the murder to talk about staying friends.

Even after living this case for more than two years, Engle seemed incredulous at the story Hall tells, including that she feared for her life when she traveled to Mexico with Cave’s killer.

Engle thought the Hall seen at trial, stern and seemingly emotionless, seemed markedly different than the more engaged person portrayed in the 48 hours piece.

“It was fake. Like she’s living her own created story of what didn’t happen. She just looks like she’s acting, and as no remorse,” he said.

CBS 42’s Alexis Patterson also talked to Hall’s parents Tuesday, and asked them why their family chose to put Hall’s story on a national stage.

“Laura decided to contact 48 Hours because she felt it was the only way she could get the true story out. After all the lies at the Pitonyak trial, she knew the publicity about her couldn’t get any worse, and she trusted 48 Hours to portray her story. She knew the truth would never come out in the courtroom,” her mother Carol Hall said.

Laura hall will be eligible for parole at the end of March. The jury sentenced her to five years in connection with the dismemberment of Cave’s body, and helping Colton Pitonyak flee the country.

The timing of this broadcast coincides with a new development in the case. Attorneys for Pitonyak are set to appear in the 3rd court of appeals Wednesday in an attempt to overturn his guilty verdict for Cave’s murder.

Last year the jury sentenced Pitonyak to 55 years in prison.
