The Most Razzie Worthy Films of 2008
Tomorrow, we will find out what the Oscar elite consider to be the best films of 2007. However, the Razzies are even more infamous than the Oscars, if that is possible. The Razzie Awards honor the absolute worst movies of the year, and never have a shortage of films to choose from. According to the AP, the Razzies gave their most nominations this year to “I Know Who Killed Me” and “Norbit”, while “actors” like Lindsey Lohan and Eddie Murphy received multiple Razzie nominations. The Razzies also honored films like “Bratz”, “Daddy Day Camp” and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.” However, the most ludicrous bad movie of the year was snubbed.
“The Number 23″ received a Razzies Worst Actor nomination for Jim Carrey, but it should have earned more. There is a real life cult of people who believe “The Number 23″ is a number linked to tragedy and mystery, including Jim Carrey himself. “The Number 23″ film version does show some strange coincidences linking that number to historical events. Unfortunately, Carrey and legendary bad director Joel Schumacher had to fill in the other 90 minutes.
Razzies were made for a movie like “The Number 23″ that has hysterically bad cinematography, a outrageously tattooed Carrey as a private eye in fantasy sequences, red herrings everywhere, a comically mysterious dog, and a resolution that just gets stupider with every minute. “The Number 23″ has a special place for the Razzies because of how far Carrey has fallen, as he can play it straight very well, but only with the right material. Playing it straight in a bad role and movie only makes Carrey look unintentionally funny. But seeing how far Carrey can fall, and how far Carrey and Schumacher can stretch this out, makes “The Number 23″ a Razzies worthy example of a “so bad its good” film.
However, as bad as “The Number 23″ can get, it does not reach the levels of an all time baddie. I can’t say if “I Know Who Killed Me” and “Norbit” are among the worst of all time either since I didn’t see them, but they do sound like it. Still, the Razzies have honored worse movies, according to the website IMDb, like “Freddy Got Fingered”, “Wild Wild West”, “Battlefield: Earth” “Mommy Dearest” and “Showgirls.” Several Razzies worthy movies this year will likely be mocked and scorned for years to come. Whether they reach the level of all time worst in the future is probably unlikely. That probably speaks to how horrible those past Razzies winners were.
“The Number 23″ is among the many movies that earned Razzies infamy in 2007. But audiences managed to survive Razzies worthy movies, and had many good movies in 2007 to wash away the bad ones. The Razzies will still have lots of fun “honoring” these train wrecks, but this year, there’s no reason to harp on the bombs of 2007 too much.
