Avant garde fashion challenge!
Avant garde definition: a group active in the invention and application of new techniques in a given field, especially in the arts.
This was a really interesting challenge because we rarely get to see the designers on Project Runway create something that doesn’t really have to be wearable, that is supposed to be avant garde. So many designers on this show act like that’s what they really want to do - couture! high fashion! avant garde! - and yet when they get the chance they often freak out or fall flat.
And then, as if that wasn’t enough, they have to create a ready-to-wear look as well! Christian looked like he might stab Tim Gunn with his scissors. We empathize with his sentiment “I wanted to throw up, omigod I was so pissed.” We understood the point, what Tim Gunn said about this being what real designers have to do - create high art as well as something commercially viable.
Keep reading to see how it went and - SPOILER ALERT - the winner and loser.
Sweet P and Rami clearly had the toughest time working together. Chris and Christian, team feirce, seemed like the easiest, best fit. I liked Kit and Ricky’s dress a lot, even if they were in the bottom two. I see what they mean about not looking well made with the satin rippling, but I didn’t think it looked as cheap as the judges did. We’re getting to the point where there aren’t any bad designs.
I would have liked to have seen more of Victoria and Jillian’s process on the jacket that Tim really liked, we didn’t really get to see much of it until the runway show. And it really was amazing how much work they did on the outfit underneath the coat that you didn’t even get to see. They could have easily won with their looks, but…
But I think it was clear from the beginning that Chris and Christian had the winning look. It was a couture dress that looked like it could have been worked on for weeks, and as Christian pointed out there was 45 yards of fabric. I was so happy for the two of them, they deserved the win.
It came down to Kit and Rami to leave, even though I would have rather seen either Sweet P or Ricky go home. Between the two of them, Kit had to go, but I really liked her style.
